Untangle and Fairpoint DSL/ PPPoE with 'static' address
Posted by rbTech Staff on 07 November 2014 06:05 PM

Untangle is a very powerful and versatile UTM firewall appliance.

Fairpoint is the low cost 'broadband' DSL provider in Vermont and northern New England.

Fairpoint DSL requires the use of PPPoE to authenticate your connection to their DSLAM (yuck).

Untangle, especially older versions <=9.x are... difficult... to set up with PPPoE, though later versions of Untangle have greatly improved DSL/ PPPoE support.

In a recent Untangle upgrade from 9.4 -> 11.0, I ran into trouble getting the firewall to connect to the Internet.  I tested using a laptop and was able to immediately and successfully connect, so it wasn't a sudden issue with the DSL itself.

It turned out that the magic fix (that I wasn unable to find anywhere on the Untangle forums) was that I needed to assign their static IP as an aliased IP in the interface setup.  Once I did that it was immediately successful in connecting and all was happy.

Hope this saves someone the 2 hours it took me to bash my way through it!
