So, Symantec's documentation is notoriously sparse - there is very little information out there about handling the licensing and that ilk.

From what I've found, it comes down to the versions. We will see two versions on our day-to-day jobs, 11 and 12. The licensing between the two is VERY different. 11 doesn't have any real licesnsing other than when you first install it - you will need to enter a key. There is no license SLF file. It won't break when the license expires but Symantec Sales won't leave you alone. If you have 11 and you buy licenses you will get version 12 licenses. There is no option to update the software inside of 11, you need to redownload the client from the link that is given to you in the license PDF. With version 12 the SLF license file will become useful, it can live on a server and clients can point to it or it can live on each client locally.
