Windows 2008/ 2012 delete removed NIC from device manager

Particularly after a P2V conversion, you may find yourself needing to remove all traces of a NIC from a server.

For example on a Domain Controller, if the NIC changes, you may find that it's unhappy about the domain profile - the  server will show the new NIC as being on a private network rather than the Domain network, even though it's been addressed with the correct IP and all.

To fix it, you need to launch device manager, with the option to view removed devices:

cmd > as Administrator

set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

devmgmt.msc

View -> Show hidden devices

Navigate to the NIC in question - it will be greyed out.  Uninstall it.

Now you can configure the new NIC with the correct settings, and it will apply the domain profile as it should.
