PPTP and Virtual Windows server, error 628 disconnected

Ran into a genuinely strange one today, and after lots of Google-fu, head banging and frustration, we figured it out.  PPTP clients were not able to connect to the VPN, even locally. The server had been recently converted from a physical server to a VMWare ESXi guest, but the conversion was performed as part of the response to a hardware failure/ server crash which muddied the waters significantly.

After a lot of Googling, it turned out that there's a known issue with VMware ESXi 5.5 hosts, Windows 2008 RRAS, and the E1000 nic:

Turns out there are 2 fixes:
Apply a hotfix supplied by VMware (which requires a reboot of the host), or change the NIC in the VM (which only requires a reboot of the VM).

We changed the NIC in the VM from E1000 to VMXnet3, and after the normal mucking about with NIC configs and firewall profiles, *voila* it worked!

Hope this saves someone some hair pulling!
