Windows 8.1 clients can't communicate with WSUS 3.0 SP2 server, generate error 800B0001

If you are adding Windows 8 or 8.1 systems to a domain that uses WSUS, there is strong posibility that you will see a situation where the client generates an error 800B0001 and refuses to update itself from the WSUS server. The client may appear in in the WSUS console but it will be listed as "Not checked in" and if you run updates from Microsoft's online update service, they go through fine. To fix this, do the following:

On the WSUS server

  1. Reindex the WSUS database. Follow the directions here: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd939795%28v=ws.10%29. Basically, install sqlcmd on the server, copy the sql script from the script center and the run it using the command shown on the page above
  2. Run the Server Cleanup Wizard in the Update Services console
  3. Download and install this patch from Microsoft: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30747
  4. Do a syncronization or wait until your normal syncronization window has passed (usually 24 hours)

On each of the Windows 8.1 clients

  1. Open an elevated command prompt and run these commands:

net stop wuauserv

rd /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\

net start wuauserv

  1. Go to Windows Update in the Control Panel and Check now
  2. If and when you get an error 80244010, rerun Check now and it should work
