Exchange 2013 Calendar Permissions not functioning correctly
Posted by rbTech Staff on 10 February 2016 02:31 PM

This one was discovered by one of our more clever clients - they figured it out before we were able to!

History: Client makes heavy use of shared/ receptionist managed calendars in their organization.  The receptionist was experiencing fairly persistent issues where she'd get a 'permission denied' error from Outlook when she attempted to modify items in other users' calendars.  The network admin on the client site performed several tests, including adding explicit permissions for the receptionist on the users' calendar.  No matter what they tried, the receptionist was unable to modify items in the user's calendar.

After some further testing, it was determined that the receptionist was opening up over 30 calendars at the same time in Outlook, and selecting/ deselecting them as she needed to see them.  The network admin determined that Outlook is unable to handle more than 30 calendars at the same time - whichever 30 users' calendars are opened first the receptionist has permission to change.  The 31st and subsequent calendars throw errors when she tries to modify them.

Even unchecking calendars doesn't resolve it - only unchecking them all and restarting Outlook allows the additional calendars to be changed.

This site is running Exchange 2013 CU9 and Office 2013 64bit.  The issue exhibits on Outlook 2010 32bit as well, so it's not specific to a version of architecture of Outlook.

Nice find, Jim!
