VMware console gives error: vmware fat client unable to connect to the mks: Could not connect to pipe \\.\pipe\vmware-authdpipe within retry period

This occurs when you connect a vSphere client (the 'fat' client) to a server running ESXi 6.5.  Everything appears to work fine until you try to launch the console, and it gives the error below:

unable to connect to the mks: Could not connect to pipe \\.\pipe\vmware-authdpipe within retry period

Turns out, it's because you (really) have to use the shiny new web interface in ESXi 6.5, not the fat client.  Go ahead, connect via web, and then remember that VMware has been threatening to discontinue compatibility with the fat client for years, and finally perform the same facepalm I did the first time I encountered this 'error'.  It would be nice if it said 'your client is not compatible with this version of ESXi, but we can't say we weren't warned.
