To configure an account to back up a Digium, follow these steps:
  • SSH into (in-house or VPN only)
  • Create user with following command, substituting user for their username. The naming convention for accounts is name-pbx, so the rbtech account would be rbtech-pbx
sudo adduser user-pbx
  • Modify the permissions and ownership on subfolders in their home folder
sudo chown nobody:nogroup /home/user-pbx/ftp
sudo chmod a-w /home/user-pbx/ftp
sudo chown user-pbx:user-pbx /home/user-pbx/ftp/backups
  • Disable interactive logon for the user
sudo usermod -s /usr/sbin/nologin user-pbx
  • Edit the users quota with the following command. Set the "soft blocks" field to 768M and the "hard blocks" to 1G. Don't change the soft and hard inodes
sudo edquota user-pbx
  • Log in to the Digium and go to Server - Backups - Set up automatic backups
  • Set automatic backups to occur every day at a random time between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM, set Number of backups to keep at 14
  • Under FTP settings, put the following for each field
    • FTP Host Name is
    • FTP User Name and Password is the username and password for the account that you just provisioned
    • FTP Directory Path is /backups
